In contrast, the ECA is located superficially and is directed toward the face. The ICA has a larger diameter, is located deeper than the ECA, and is directed toward the mastoid process. Then, observe the shape of the carotid artery in the longitudinal view. 5 The flow direction is generally the same as the vessel direction, but it can differ from the vessel direction when eccentric atherosclerotic plaques are present.įirst, in the cross-sectional view, trace the carotid artery from the proximal CCA to the distal internal carotid artery (ICA) and then the external carotid artery (ECA), or vice versa. Angle correction is crucial for measuring the actual flow velocity, which should be performed along the flow direction instead of the vessel wall. The peak velocity is measured to detect significant stenosis. 1 Pulse-wave Doppler is needed to precisely measure flow velocity, and uses a small sample volume from the vessel center to assess the velocity at that segment. ![]() This is called the heel-and-toe technique, and is a method for steering probes. Pushing the head- or foot-side edge creates an angle between the probe surface and the vessel, which can achieve the optimal Doppler angle. 1 In most patients, the probe surface runs parallel to the common carotid artery (CCA) in its usual position, which allows scanning of the carotid artery without applying pressure. However, to accurately record velocity using color Doppler ultrasonography, the angle must be between 30° and 60°. The ultrasound beam should be perpendicular to the skin, with a linear probe generating a grayscale image. Placing a pillow induces a poor evaluation window for the carotid artery and therefore normally should not be used.Īn adequate acoustic angle is important in obtaining an accurate color Doppler image. The neck of the patient should be relaxed and the chin should be slightly raised. Tilting the face too far from the test site can distort the anatomy or compress blood vessels, especially veins. The optimal position for tilting the head of the patient is approximately 45° away from the relevant artery. However, obtaining right-posterior projections is difficult. This position makes it easy to control the ultrasound probe. The examiner generally uses their right hand to evaluate both carotid arteries. A lateral sitting position is used for most ultrasonography examinations. However, the examiner should be familiar with the practice of using both hands. This position provides an expanded sonic window with a clear view of the carotid artery and allows many ultrasound probing positions. 1 In the overhead position, the examiner sits behind the head of the patient beside the end of the bed and uses both hands in the test. ![]() ![]() This examination is a quick, non-invasive way of confirming or excluding blockage of the arteries or build-up of plaque which may pose a future threat to the patient. The examiner can observe the carotid artery from either an overhead or a lateral sitting position. Birds are a wonderful introduction to the natural world and happen to be just outside your door! Whether in the city or a forest, a variety of birds are usually within easy eyeshot or earshot. It’s frustrating, but when you do finally get that sweet spot lined up, it makes it all the more enjoyable. This often leads to you setting up an attack, only to have to dodge out of an incoming attack. While the attacks will are telegraphed, you often get a fraction of a second to get out of the way before you’re hit. What you do have to worry about is dodging incoming attacks. Bar a few exceptions, the enemy rarely crosses over to your side, meaning you don’t have to worry about running into an enemy during the chaos. Combat takes place in real-time, and your spells will generally be cast 4 tiles ahead of you. The battle map is a 4×8 grid split into two sides one for you, and one for your opponent. But it also means that combat gets progressively more chaotic.Ĭombat is intense, with the basic system taken straight out of Mega Man Battle Network. As your luck goes higher, so does the chance to get better spells and artefacts. Luck is a stat that increases after each victory. This helps as difficulty scales depending on your luck. Though the main way to earn artefacts is through levelling up. You often earn them for rescuing hostages, or opening chests. Will I have to try and protect a group of hostages? Its almost impossible to know, and that lends the game a sense of adventure that’s hard to replicate.Īrtefacts act as a sort of perk system. You never quite know what’s around the corner. You then drag that point down so instead of amplifying it quietened that frequency. There are lots of instructions out there on how to do sound processing. This can improve the quality of the sound coming from your microphone (e.g. Using applications such as Audacity (free) or Adobe Audition (paid) you can apply various audio processing techniques like filtering and noise reduction. One example of wanting to stream audio through another application is to improve audio quality. Also be aware that cameras and microphones are separate devices, so you may need to connect up video and audio separately. There any many options out there and I would suggest reading some knowledgeable reviews before selecting one. I am not trying to exhaustively list such tools, just be aware that they exist. But they can also be used to generate a camera source. This is useful for example when streaming game play by streaming directly to YouTube, Twitch, etc. There is also OBS Studio (and others) that can watch a part of the screen and capture that, turning it into a video feed. The application thinks its just using a different video camera. This allows, for example, the output of CamTwist to be fed into the camera for Google Meet, Skype, etc. They can create a virtual camera for other applications to use as an input video stream. Similarly there are programs that can do this with video, such as CamTwist on the Mac. The second application then selects a Microphone called BlackHole from which it gets the audio stream.) You select that and the audio output goes to BlackHole. (BlackHole etc appears alongside speakers and headphones as the output device. BlackHole and Soundflower are example applications on Mac that can connect the audio output of one program to the microphone of another, if you can tell the application to use different “speakers”. There are some 3rd party utilities around that make this possible, such as “Virtual Cable”. That is, on Mac and WIndows you cannot just hook the audio/video output of program 1 to the input of program 2. It may be obvious to most, but it took me a moment to realize that applications can read from the microphone or camera, and can send output to the speakers or screen, but that does not mean you can do a UNIX pipe command between them. There are lots of interesting things you can do, but they don’t always all work together as you plan. ![]() It was interesting to see how the complexity can blow out pretty quickly. In this post I focus on some of the underlying technologies. In my last post I talked about some of the decision process I used when exploring which video platform to use a series of online office hours for ecommerce. ![]() There were two muzzle brakes that separated themselves from the rest of the group: the brand new Alamo Four Star Cowl Induction Muzzle Brake, and the very popular American Precision Arms (APA) Little B*. Without further ado, here is the data for the recoil reduction on the 6mm rifle for each muzzle brake:Īny surprises? I have to guess there might be a few. It represented the heaviest rifle in our test, although that weight is not uncommon for a precision rifle. That weight includes the scope and mount shown in the photo. My 6XC rifle weighed in at portly 16.2 pounds with a bare muzzle, and no bipod or magazine. All 3 cartridges are very popular among the top shooters in the Precision Rifle Series ( see the data). That load is also roughly representative of the popular 6mm Creedmoor or 6×47 Lapua cartridges. I used my personal handloads for testing the 6XC, which launch a Berger 105gr Hybrid at 3,000 fps. The rifle used for this was chambered for the 6XC ( view rifle details). We’ll start with the smallest caliber tested, the 6mm. To learn more about those measurements and hear the cases experts make for both sides, please read the previous post. Average % Reduction – This is just the combined average of the previous two measures (evenly weighted). It’s essentially how tall the highest point on the curve is. % Reduction in Peak Force – This is the reduction in the highest instantaneous peak force through the entire recoil event. It isn’t just the peak force, but the entire “area under the curve” when you graph force over time. ![]() It represents the total “size” of the force that I described in the last post. % Reduction in Overall Momentum – This is the reduction in overall impulse or total momentum of the rifle at the end of the recoil. For each muzzle brake, I will show 3 pieces of information: ![]() Here is an example of the results I recorded for one of the muzzle brakes:Īs I publish these results, I plan to show how much each muzzle brake reduces recoil compared to a bare muzzle. You can watch a video of me running through this for one of the muzzle brakes in the previous post. So I backed that down to only be 3 shots per muzzle brake. I started out firing 5 shots per muzzle brake, but as I refined the system and setup, my data became so consistent and repeatable that 5 shots seemed like I was just wasting a lot of good match-grade ammo without adding any value. The results are based on the average of multiple shots fired with each muzzle brake. Honestly, I’m not here to try to convince anyone one way or the other, but simply present the data. As we learned in the last post, it seems like it may be short-sighted if you ignore either of them. Some experts lean more towards that being related to the total impulse or momentum, and others think it is more linked to the peak force. The big question comes down to what measurement most closely correlates to perceived recoil from the shooter’s perspective. Unfortunately, there is no industry standard for measuring recoil, which means manufacturers often publish whatever makes them look better. For more info on the test equipment and how the data was gathered, please see the previous post.Īs we discussed in the last post, when someone claims a product “reduces recoil by 50%” … it usually isn’t clear what they’re talking about. The recoil data was collected using high-speed, high-resolution force sensors. To see the full line-up of muzzle brakes tested, check out this post. This post summarizes the results for the recoil tests ran on 20+ muzzle brakes using 6mm and 6.5mm test rifles. ![]() Click on the "Scanner" drop-down to select your product and then select the required default USB 2.0 compatibility setting.
